Our focus: Helping you heal
RRISC offers confidential counselling and support by experienced and specially trained counsellors.
We offer support to victims/survivors who have experienced sexual assault.
We offer support to victims/survivors non-offending family members/supporters.
If you have experienced sexual assault you might feel:
- Confused - by feelings of hate towards the person who abused you, when they may have been someone you trusted
- Guilty - that it's your fault that it happened; that you should have been able to stop it.
- Ashamed - because of the things that the abuser did, because of what other people might think
- Alone - you may think it doesn't happen to anyone else
- Scared - because you don't want it to happen anymore, or of what they may have said will happen if you tell someone.
- Sad - that your life or your family isn't the way you want it.
You may or may not experience:
- Anger
- Shame
- Depression
- Distrust
Or you may or may not feel:
- Powerless
- Unworthy
- Physically ill
- Self blame
Whatever happened, and whatever you are feeling, it's important to remember. The blame lies solely with the abuser, NOT YOU.
What is counselling?
At RRISC, it is your choice what information you want to share with your counsellor. Some women may choose to talk about their feelings in relation to the sexual violence; or they may wish to focus primarily on what happened to them; or you may want to address other issues that are affecting you, as a result of the abuse, such as depression and low self esteem.
Your counsellor will listen to you; believe you and validate your feelings. They may offer options and strategies that may assist with various issues that you are facing.
